100th Anniversary of the Titanic

15 April 1912: Following a collision with an iceberg, the "unsinkable" Titanic went down, with the loss of 1,500 lives. Even today, the sinking of the Titanic is considered one of the greatest maritime disasters of all time.

14 April 1912 shortly before midnight: the lookout on duty made out a giant iceberg lying directly in the ship's path. An evasion manoeuvre was immediately ordered, but it was too late. The luxury steamer collided at full steam with the ice mass weighing roughly 300,000 tonnes. Once the damage was ascertained, one thing was quickly apparent. The Titanic would sink. Emergency calls were sent shortly after midnight and the evacuation of the ship was ordered.

Nyeri Misterius di Wajah


Ayah kami tidak pernah merasakan nyeri dahsyat di wajah sebelumnya. Dibagian dalam pipi kanannya seperti ditusuk-tusuk. Setelah itu tanpa peringatan wajahnya serasa disayat-sayat dan disetrum. Nyeri tak terhingga itu hilang dan timbul selama 2.5 tahun.

Untuk mencari kesembuhan, ayah kami berobat ke sejumlah dokter, tetapi nyeri tetap tinggal. Penderitaan berakhir setalah ayah kami ke dokter bedah syaraf dan menjalani bedah mikro invasif minimal.

Dalam dunia kedokteran, gangguan itu disebut trigeminal neuralgia dan terbilang langka. Penderita diperkirakan 8 orang dari 100.000 penduduk. Dokter spesialis bedah syaraf dari rumah sakit RSAL Surabaya, Sofyanto menuturkan, pasien kerap datang dalam keputusasaan karena tersiksa nyeri hebat. Yang memperihatinkan, nyeri dipipi disangka pasien sakit gigi. Ketika gigi dicabut, ternyata nyeri tetap muncul.

Trigeminal neuralgia merupakan sakit syaraf nomr 5, yaitu saraf kepala terbesar, tertekan pembuluh darah. Saraf nomor 5 mengatur perasa wajah, terletak disekitar batang otak.

Sonar

Sonar (SOund Navigation And Ranging) is the generic name of the technology that is used to locate objects underwater. Sonar systems are of two basic types - active and passive. In active sonar, the system emits a pulse of sound and then the operator listens for echoes. In passive sonar, the operator listens to sounds emitted by the object one is trying to locate.

Active Sonar
When a sound signal is sent into the water, part of it will be reflected back if it strikes an object or "target". The distance to the object can be calculated by measuring the time between when the signal is sent out and when the reflected sound, or echo, is received. For example, if four seconds elapse between the emission of the outgoing sound and the return of its echo, the sound has taken two seconds to travel to the object and two seconds to return. The average speed of sound in the water is 1,500 meters per second. So if it takes two seconds for sound to reach the object, we can assume the object is 2 sec x 1,500 m/sec or 3,000 meters away.

Tsunami

Sometimes reaching heights of 40 meters (120 ft.) or more, tsunamis are the most dramatic and destructive of waves.

Underwater disturbances, such as volcanoes, earthquakes and landslides, are the cause of these monster waves. The larger the disturbance, the larger the tsunami will be.

In the open ocean, tsunamis may be hard to spot. Long wavelengths can hide the size of the wave, but just like other kinds of waves, changes occur when the wave enters shallow water.

The wavelength shortens, and the height increases. The strength of the disturbance, the distance the wave travels and the shape of the coastline combined determine the tsunami's height, and ultimately, its destructiveness.
